St. Norbert Splits With Ripon to Open MWC Play

DE PERE - St. Norbert College opened its 2010 Midwest Conference baseball season with a doubleheader split with Ripon College at Mel Nicks Field. The Green Knights claimed the opener 12-6 before dropping the nightcap 21-2.

St. Norbert (10-8, 1-1 MWC) opened the first game with a 9-1 lead through five innings before holding off a late Ripon rally. Tony Jandron had an RBI single in the first inning, and Ryan Gusick had an RBI double in the second.

The Green Knights broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Jandron and Ryan Kehl and RBI singles, while Garrick Fisher had a two-run single. St. Norbert added three insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Jandron and RBI singles by Fisher and Kehl.

St. Norbert had 18 hits in the opener, with Jandron leading the way at 4-for-5. Kehl and Ryan Way each had three hits, while Matt Hannon, Yost and Fisher each had two hits. Fisher had four RBIs.

Trevin Hillesheim worked the first six-plus innings for the win, allowing seven hits and four runs. Ryan Sullivan picked up a three-inning save, allowing four hits and two runs.

In the nightcap, Ripon scored 12 times in the fourth inning to take a 17-0 lead. The Red Hawks had 19 hits against a cavalcade of St. Norbert pitchers.

Fisher and Jordan Powers were each 2-for-3, while Jandron extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a 1-for-3 showing.
