LAKE FOREST, Ill. - St. Norbert College won its first two games at the Midwest Conference Women's Softball Championship to sit one win away from its third league championship in four years after the first day of action at Nick Wasylik Field.

St. Norbert topped Monmouth College 5-0 and Lake Forest College 4-2 to remain the last unbeaten team in the tournament. Lake Forest and Monmouth face off in a loser-out game at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the winner needing to beat the Green Knights twice starting at Noon. St. Norbert, now 29-6 on the year, has won 24 of its last 25 games.

Against Monmouth, St. Norbert jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Stephanie Ortiz's grounder to third plated Brittany Narges. Kayla Krueger then followed with a solo home run. Narges' groundout in the fourth scored Collette Ullmer. Krueger had an RBI groundout in the fifth to score Oritz, and the fifth run scored later in the inning with an error.

Krueger spun a two-hitter with no walks and six strikeouts to improve to 13-1. Krueger had the only multi-hit game at 2-for-3.

Lake Forest scored two runs in the second to take a 2-0 lead, but St. Norbert answered in the third. Tracy Palmer and Ortiz hit back-to-back doubles, and Ortiz later scored on a wild pitch. The Green Knights took the lead with two runs in the fifth. Brieanne Oehlke's single scored Palmer, and an outfield error allowed Krueger to score.

The Foresters loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning, but couldn't get the game-tying hit.

Oehlke was 2-for-3 and Palmer 2-for-4 to lead St. Norbert. Kari Corbeille allowed two hits with six walks and four strikeouts to improve to 9-3 on the year.
