Green Knights Split First Day at MWC Tournament - Face Long Road Back Saturday

GRINNELL, Iowa - St. Norbert College split its first two games at the Midwest Conference Baseball Championship with a 7-3 win over Illinois College and a 7-4 loss to Ripon College.

The Green Knights (24-11) will face Grinnell College (22-15) in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grinnell's North Diamond. The winner of that must then beat Ripon (23-15) twice to win the championship.

St. Norbert couldn't get much timely hitting against Ripon, falling behind 7-0 through six innings. The Green Knights mounted a late rally, scoring once in the seventh on a Tony Jandron RBI single. Ryan Way's groundout in the eighth scored a run, and Jared Yost's two-run home in the ninth finished out the scoring.

Jandron took the loss for St. Norbert, allowing 11 hits and seven runs with one walk and six strikeouts in six innings. Matt Dwyer picked up the win for Ripon, going 8 2/3 with nine hits, five walks and eight strikeouts.

Ryan Kehl was 3-for-4 in the Ripon game, while Jandron, Yost and Garrick Fisher all had two hits apiece. St. Norbert had 10 hits in the game.

Against Illinois College, this time it was St. Norbert leading 7-0 through five innings in a first-round game played at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Jandron had a first-inning sacrifice fly, and then added a two-run single in the second. Jandron had an RBI single in the fourth and Kehl an RBI single in the fifth as the Green Knights built their lead.

St. Norbert had eight hits in the game, with Jandron going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Fisher was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.

Bryan Stoppenbach got the complete-game win to improve to 6-1. Stoppenbach scattered seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
