ALL students must complete this form, whether they have prior language experience or not. As part of the Core Curriculum Second Language Competency degree requirement, the College is gathering information on the prior Foreign Langauage experience for all incoming students. During Summer Orientation/Registration, all entering students with previous language study in French, German, Spanish, Russian, or Chinese regardless of amount, will be required to complete a brief, on-line language exam in the language studied. Submission of the below web form allows students to be appropriately scheduled to take the exam if necessary. If the student plans to continue the language study at St. Norbert, this exam will serve as the language placement exam. If a student places at a high enough level, this exam will satisfy the Second Language Competency Requirement towards their degree, regardless of if the language study is continued at SNC. If a student has studied French, German, or Spanish but does not plan to continue language study at St. Norbert, they will still be asked to complete the exam during Orientation. This exam is not for a grade. It is an assessment instrument that allows the Modern Languages and Literatures faculty to gauge the language study and proficiency of our entering class. For this reason, it is essential that you complete the exam if you have previously studied French, German, or Spanish, regardless of your plans to continue language study at St. Norbert. If you have studied more than one of these languages but do not plan to continue language study at St. Norbert, you should take the exam in the language you have studied most or in which you feel strongest. If you plan to continue language study in more than one of these languages, you should take the exam in each language you plan to study. If you have studied a language other than French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese or if you have no prior language study whatsoever, you will not take the exam. Please fill out the following information regarding your prior foreign language study: On behalf of the Modern Languages and Literatures faculty and St. Norbert College, thank you for your cooperation. The Modern Languages and Literatures Discipline has a talented and dynamic faculty and offers an exciting array of courses. We offer a major and teaching minor in French, German, and Spanish and a minor in French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Knowledge of another language is not only a practical skill in today's ever-changing world, but also broadens horizons and provides the preparation necessary to understand different cultures and succeed in today's globally competitive world.
