Derek Elkins

Co-Director & Protestant Chaplain

B.A. Philosophy, University of North Carolina-Greensboro (2003)
M.A. Christian Education, Union Presbyterian Seminary (2007)
M.A. Theology, The Theological School at Drew University (2010)

Derek Elkins joined the SNC community during the Fall 2015 semester to support the spirituality of students from Protestant Christian denominations. He enjoys walking with students into a faith that celebrates mystery, pauses for contemplation, hungers for connection, and lives through compassion. Derek has worked in higher education since 2008 and served as a minister for youth and college students before then. At SNC, Derek works with students to lead a worship service called Thin Place with students from a variety of Protestant traditions, journeys with students discerning their vocations through the Navigate program, is a chaplain for the SNC football team, and uses artistic community expression to enrich the liturgical year. Derek also co-leads the TRIPS Program, equipping students to grow through hands-on education, service, and reflection to become engaged citizens who strengthen communities by committing to social justice
