Jeffrey A. Frick, Ph.D., associate provost for academic services and professor of chemistry at Illinois Wesleyan University, will be the next dean and academic vice president of St. Norbert College. He will begin on July 1.

"We are delighted and most fortunate to have Jeff joining us at St. Norbert College," said President Thomas Kunkel. "He is an experienced and accomplished leader in higher education. He helped Illinois Wesleyan become one of the nation's most respected liberal arts colleges, and he will do the same at St. Norbert."

As dean and academic vice president, Frick will oversee the college's 119- member faculty and all its academic activities. In addition to curricular matters, his responsibilities include direction of the Mulva Library, the college's athletics program, academic services and information technology. Frick will also supervise the proposed expansion and renovation of St. Norbert's science facility.

"I am thrilled to be joining the St. Norbert community," said Frick. "The opportunity to work with President Kunkel, administrative colleagues, and faculty colleagues to enhance the educational experience for St. Norbert students promises to be tremendously exciting. I was truly impressed by the sense of community and collegiality that exists on campus and I am honored to be selected as the next dean."
Frick joined the Illinois Wesleyan University faculty in 1992 to teach biochemistry and organic chemistry. From 1999 to 2004, he served as chair of the school's chemistry department, and in 2008 was named associate provost for academic services. In that role, he has served as a member of the academic affairs administrative team, reporting to the provost and dean of the faculty. Previously he had served as assistant provost and registrar.

Frick's research interests include the tracking of environmental contaminants present in wildlife and the synthesis of biological compounds. With his chemistry colleagues at Illinois Wesleyan, Frick was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to write an integrated curriculum for first- and second-year college chemistry courses. That led to the publication of the two-volume textbook, Integrated Chemistry: A Two-Year General and Organic Chemistry Sequence (Houghton-Mifflin, 2000).

"Jeff will help us maintain our strong momentum," said Kunkel. "He knows what excellence looks like. He has deep experience working with faculty in a liberal arts college environment, and he also understands the unique qualities and responsibilities of faith-based institutions."

Frick received his A.B. in Chemistry from Augustana College and his Ph.D. from Loyola University of Chicago. At Loyola he received the Arthur J. Schmitt Dissertation Fellowship and the Dumbach Medal for excellence in research. Frick also completed the Management Development Program at the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education and is a member of the Project Kaleidoscope Faculty for the 21st Century.

Frick will replace Michael Marsden, who came to St. Norbert College in 2003. Marsden, who has spent more than 40 years in higher education, is stepping down as dean of the college and academic vice president but will remain at St. Norbert College to teach. Marsden has also hosted the popular television show "Conversations from St. Norbert College."
