The St. Norbert College community honored Jill Hofer, campus safety office coordinator, and student Sandra Payan at the President's Dinner on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Hofer received the Exceptional Service Award after being nominated by faculty and staff, while Payan earned the college's Employee Endowed Scholarship.

Hofer graduated from St. Norbert College in 1988 and returned in 2001 as a member of the campus safety office, where she has had a major impact on a number of significant projects on campus. She recognized the need to audit, update and enhance the campus video surveillance system. After developing a five-year plan that covers system upgrades, maintenance and new installations, she researched vendors and systems with an eye toward the future needs of the campus. A number of new cameras were installed in strategic locations as a result, and the on going plan will allow the campus to stay current with surveillance needs.

Along with colleagues in Information Technology and Facilities, Hofer facilitated the purchase, installation, integration and testing of a state-of-the-art campus emergency notification system. As a member of the college's emergency management committee, Jill significantly contributed to the complete review and update of the college's emergency procedure manual. She also collaborated with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in developing a system for incident reporting and student conduct management.

Payan, from Minneapolis, earned a $1,000 scholarship for her volunteer work and involvement in organizations. Payan entered St. Norbert College as part of the Academic Enhancement program. She is a mentor for the STAR program for multicultural and first-generation students and worked with admissions in an outreach program. She collaborated with Sabine Hyland, assistant professor of anthropology, on an ethnographic research project, and has also been involved with the St. Norbert College Children Center. Payan is also one of the founding members and the current president of La Alianza, a Latino/Hispanic organization on campus. In addition, she is involved in planning cultural events with Multicultural Student Services and in the recruitment of Latino students.
