St. Norbert College will host the traveling exhibition of Saint John's Bible from Monday, Sept. 30, through Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Baer gallery of the college's Bush Art Center.
The exhibit features prints of the hand-written and hand-illuminated Bible, commissioned in 1998 by Saint John's Abbey and Saint John's University in Minnesota and created by professional scribes in Wales under the direction of calligrapher Donald Jackson. The undertaking combined a centuries-old tradition of craftsmanship with the latest capabilities of computer technology and electronic communication.
The Smithsonian Magazine cited the project as, "one of the extraordinary undertakings of our time." The 24 illuminations on display use modern patterns and color schemes to illustrate biblical scenes, including the "Garden of Eden," the "Restoration of Job's Fortune," "Ezekiel's Vision of the New Temple" and the "Pentecost."
The gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
