bell hooks to Engage In Dialogue with Hari Kondabolu During 2016 St. Norbert College Residency

Renowned social justice scholar bell hooks will engage in a dialogue with political comic Hari Kondabolu on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the Walter Theatre of the Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts on the St. Norbert College campus. DJ Afrekete -- a local DJ who is also a professor of film studies at Lawrence University -- will open the dialogue with music. This event is part of hooks' residency with the college's Cassandra Voss Center, which will take place April 18-22 and include a variety of public events.

The dialogue is free and open to the public. No tickets or registration are required, but early arrival is recommended (doors open at 6 p.m.). A live-stream video link for the event will be posted at http://www.snc.edu/cvc a week in advance.

Hari Kondabolu is a Brooklyn-based, Queens-raised comic who has been featured on shows including David Letterman, Conan, John Oliver, Jimmy Kimmel and NPR's Terry Gross. The New York Times has called him "one of the most exciting political comics in stand-up today." Kondabolu was New York University APA Institute's "Artist in Residence" for the 2014-15 academic year. He earned his B.A. in comparative politics from Bowdoin College, and his master's in human rights from the London School of Economics. He is a lifelong fan of bell hooks.

bell hooks' 2016 Cassandra Voss Center residency is her third visit to the St. Norbert College campus. She is currently the Distinguished Professor in Residence in Appalachian studies at Berea College in Kentucky, where her own bell hooks Institute is a sister organization to the Cassandra Voss Center. hooks is a leading public intellectual and the author of more than 40 books; her first book, "Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism," was named one of the "20 most influential women's books of the last 20 years" by Publishers Weekly.
