St. Norbert College's first-year students will partake in an afternoon of community service, "Into the Streets," on Friday, Aug. 26, from 1:45 to 5 p.m. The kick-off rally will be held at the Walter Theatre on the St. Norbert campus. Following the rally, community service will be performed in approximately 38 different locations, both on and off campus, with over 500 students participating.

"Into the Streets" encourages participants to become active in their surrounding communities through service and action. Its primary goal is to orient new students to the area and forge ties with the community. Service is a founding principle of the Norbertine order and St. Norbert College.

For the fifth year in a row, as part of "Into the Streets," a potato drop will be held. At the potato drop, students will unload (from a donated Schneider semi-truck) and distribute 5,000 bags of potatoes to 15 community food pantries that will pick up from Paul's Pantry.

This day of service is organized by the St. Norbert College Office of Leadership, Student Engagement, and First Year Experience and the Sturzl Center for Community Service and Learning.

St. Norbert College received a $1,500 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help support "Into the Streets," Festival Foods donated 42 cases of water, and Schneider will provide transportation for the potatoes.
