St. Norbert College Community Outreach & Language Services Presents October Classes and Workshops

St. Norbert College Community Outreach & Language Services will present a variety of classes and workshops this October, highlighting cultures and traditions from around the world. The workshops, which are open to the public, include:

Southern Comforts Cooking Class

Wednesday, Oct. 5, 5-7:30 p.m. on the St. Norbert College campus. Instructed by St. Norbert College chefs Dan Staats and David De Roche, participants will learn how to make shrimp and grits, buttermilk fried chicken and other classic southern dishes. Participation costs $40 per person and the registration deadline is Oct. 19.

Managing the Mulva Library Collection

Tuesday, Oct. 11, 6-8 p.m. on the St. Norbert College campus. The archives of the Mulva Library at St. Norbert College house a collection of old and rare materials. This workshop will focus on the history of books and examine some of the more interesting items in the collection, led by the library's archivist Sally Cubitt. Cost is $30 per person, or $20 per person for SNC students, faculty, staff and alumni. The registration deadline is Oct. 4.

Great Soups Cooking Class

Thursday, Oct. 13, 6-8 p.m. at the UW Extension kitchen in Bellevue. Fall is a great time to take wonderful vegetables and make soups to satisfy the soul. Soups may include chicken noodle, minestrone, clam chowder, butternut squash and tomato. Local chef John Lutgen will show how to prepare a variety of hearty, satisfying soups for fall and winter. Participation costs $35 per person. The registration deadline is Oct. 5.

Recruiting and Maintaining Volunteers

Tuesday, Oct. 18, 6-8 p.m. on the St. Norbert College campus. This interactive class will consider the best practices, examine the role of social and other media and help participants develop solid volunteer recruitment and retention plans. The class will be led by Michael Schwartz-Oscar, the executive director for the Brown County Oral Health Partnership and former executive director for the Volunteer Center of Brown County. Cost is $30 per person, or $20 per person for SNC students, faculty, staff and alumni. The registration deadline is Oct. 11.

History of Puppetry

Thursday, Oct. 20, 6-8 p.m. on the St. Norbert College campus. This presentation will look at the fascinating history of puppetry and examine how puppets are operated. Participants will be able to try out the puppets as well, led by April Beiswenger, St. Norbert College associate professor of theatre studies and departmental scenographer. Cost is $30 per person, or $20 per person for SNC students, faculty, staff and alumni. The registration deadline is Oct. 13.

Egyptian Cooking

Saturday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to noon at Southern Door High School in Brussels. In this class, participants will learn how to make three Egyptian entrees and one dessert, and sample three Egyptian beverages. Cost is $40 per person. The registration deadline is Oct. 14.

Professional Speaking Workshop

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the St. Norbert College campus. People engage in public speaking every day and it is a critical part of an individual's professional success. This workshop, instructed by Anna Herrman, St. Norbert College assistant professor of communication and media studies, will cover the causes of public speaking anxiety and how to manage it, plus strategies to project confidence. Cost is $30 per person, or $20 per person for SNC students, faculty, staff and alumni. The registration deadline is Oct. 18.

Asian Appetizers and Small Plates Cooking Class

Wednesday, Oct. 26, 5-7:30 p.m. on the St. Norbert College campus. This class will create some of the favorite Asian appetizers of St. Norbert College chefs Brian Kerwin and Joel Joski. Cost is $40 per person. The registration deadline is Oct. 19.

Temari Workshop

Thursday, Oct. 27, 6-8 p.m. on the St. Norbert College campus. Learn about the history of temari and how to create this old Japanese art form in a hands-on workshop. Cost is $30 per person, or $20 per person for SNC students, faculty, staff and alumni. The registration deadline is Oct. 20.
