St. Norbert College sophomore Jasmine Babineaux (Lafayette, La.) has been named a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,000 colleges and universities dedicated to campus-based civic engagement. Babineaux is a business management and English creative-writing double-major.

Babineaux is one of 273 students who were named Newman Civic Fellows in 2017. During her time at St. Norbert College, she has been the leading voice on campus for two student-led initiatives: Black Lives Matter and Take Back the Knight, a violence prevention and advocacy series at St. Norbert.

"Jasmine's deep respect for the human dignity of each person she meets is evident in the commitments she makes and the way she works with others," said Tom Kunkel, president of St. Norbert College, in his nomination letter for Babineaux. "Jasmine has contributed a great deal to our campus and community in the short time she has been at St. Norbert College."

"As I grew older, I realized that I had to use my voice for the people who didn't have one," Babineaux said in a personal statement. "I hope to encourage people that their liberation is the liberation of us all as people."

The Newman Civic Fellows Awards were created in memory of Campus Compact founder Frank Newman, who dedicated his life to creating change through education reform. The awards honor the achievement of undergraduate and graduate student leaders who have taken action in pursuit of long-term social change, and who engage and inspire others in their communities through service, research and advocacy. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are made possible through the generous support of the KPMG Foundation and the Newman's Own Foundation.
