Ashwaubenon high school senior student Becca Huhtala is the 2017 recipient of the Robert and Carol Bush Vocal Music Award, presented by the Dudley Birder Chorale of St. Norbert College. Huhtala will receive the award of $500 at the chorale's performance of "America Sings" on Friday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., where she will also appear as a featured soloist. Huhtala's vocal music teacher, Teresa Schroepfer, will also receive a $500 award and Ashwaubenon high school will be presented with a $300 award for its choral library.

The endowed program of the Bush Vocal Music Award was established in 2003 for the Dudley Birder Chorale by Robert and Carol Bush as a means to promote vocal music in high schools. Each year, the recipient is selected from a high school located in one of the communities represented by membership in the chorale. These communities include high schools from the following counties: Brown, Outagamie, Kewaunee, Shawano, Door, Manitowoc and Oconto.

Auditions were held Saturday, April 22 at St. Norbert College. Competing high school students were recommended by their teachers as an outstanding junior or senior vocal student in their school. Judges were Kent Paulsen, director of Knights on Broadway and adjunct instructor of music at St. Norbert College, Linda Thill, Lee Anne Scovell, Charlie Hagen and Dudley Birder, musical director of the Dudley Birder Chorale at St. Norbert College.
