St. Norbert College Announces Literary Award Winners

The St. Norbert College English discipline held its annual Literary Awards on Wednesday, May 3. During the event, English students presented readings of their work, after which professor Laurie MacDiarmid presented the awards for achievement in writing. Awards were given out for remarkable works in the categories of creative prose, critical essay and poetry, as judged by members of the English faculty. The awards also included the Mary McHale Wood Award for Excellence in Writing and the English Faculty Endowed Scholarship Award, each of which is given out to one junior student a year in recognition of overall accomplishment in writing. Critical Essay
First Place, $300.00: "Trains, Thoughts, and Trains of Thought: Making the Connection "In a Station of the Metro," Mary Paplham (De Pere, Wis.)
Second Place (tie), $100.00: "Lacanian Manifestation of Unconscious Fear and "Desire in Melville's "Bartleby,"" Elynor Gregorich (Greenwood, Wis.) and "Masked Meanings: The Historical Importance of Masques and their Role in The Tempest," Katie Hopkins (De Pere)
Honorable Mentions: "Does a Cold War Culture Dream of Destruction?: Sixties Paranoia and Philip K. Dick," Alaina (Letty) Mundt (Oconomowoc, Wis.) and "Alice's Exploration of Feminine Identity in Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass," Alexandra Paleka (Burlington, Wis.)
Poetry
First Place, $300.00: "Whirring," Nicholas Surprise (Wautoma, Wis.)
Second Place, $100.00: "Juvenile," Katie Hopkins (De Pere, Wis.)
Honorable Mention: "The Deer," Nicholas Surprise (Wautoma, Wis.)
Creative Prose
