St. Norbert College Music Theatre will present a production of the award-winning hit musical "Cats" as the first show of its summer 2017 season.
Andrew Lloyd Weber's all-time hit musical "Cats" returns, retaining 20 of the 24-member cast from last season. "Cats" will run from June 8-22 in the Webb Theatre of the Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts on the college campus.
Based upon Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, "Cats" first appeared in New York in 1981 and enjoys the distinction of being the longest-running musical on Broadway.
Alicia Birder, who will also appear in the role of Grizabella, is director and choreographer with Kent Paulsen serving as music director. The production staff includes Corey Pinchart, set design; Andrew Schmidt, lighting; Chris Gabryszek, sound; Sallie Petty, props; Ruth Novak, costume design and Lois Gegare wigs and makeup. Lauren O'Callaghan will serve as stage manager.

The July production, "The Showcase of Stars," will feature music theatre alumni returning to play scenes from musicals in which they appeared in over the past 55 years.
"The Showcase of Stars" will play July 19-22 in the Walter Theatre on the St. Norbert College campus. It will be directed by James and Alicia Birder with Kent Paulsen serving as music director. Dudley Birder is organizing and arranging the music, in addition to serving as narrator. "The Showcase of Stars" will be Dudley Birder's last music theatre production.
Dudley Birder founded summer music theatre at St. Norbert in 1962 and has served as producer, director and/or musical director for all of the 96 musicals presented since that time. Although stepping away from music theatre after this summer's season, he will continue to direct the Dudley Birder Chorale at St. Norbert College, which he founded in 1974. Birder turned 90 on March 23.
Persons interested in working backstage on costumes, make-up, lighting, sets and running crew should call Dudley Birder at 403-3116.
