St. Norbert College to Welcome Founder of the Center for Democracy & Citizenship

The Norman Miller Center for Peace, Justice & Public Understanding at St. Norbert College will present the 2018 Ambassador of Peace Award to Harry Boyte. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in the Hendrickson Dining Room of the F. K. Bemis International Center, 299 Third St., De Pere, and will be followed by the award ceremony at 7 p.m. Boyte will also give a lecture on "Education as the Seedbed for a Democratic Renaissance" following the presentation of the award. These events are free and open to the public.

Boyte will also participate in a public work conference at St. Norbert College, titled "Invigorating Democracy and Public Work," the following day, Saturday, Feb. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., also in the F. K. Bemis International Center. This conference is free and open to the public. Lunch and coffee breaks are included with registration, which is required online at http://www.snc.edu/millercenter. Boyte will sit on a panel during the start of the conference and will be joined by: Micheline Ishay, professor of human rights and international studies at the University of Denver; Harvey Kaye, the Ben and Joyce Rosenberg professor of gender and law at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay; and Alison Staudinger, assistant professor of gender and law at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Boyte is the founder of the International Youth Citizenship Initiative in Public Achievement and senior scholar in public work philosophy at the Sabo Center for Democracy & Citizenship at Augsburg College, which merged with the Center for Democracy & Citizenship that he founded. He is also a senior fellow at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Boyte has authored 10 books on democracy, citizenship and community organization, and his work has appeared in more than 150 publications, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times.

The St. Norbert Ambassador of Peace demonstrates the qualities of a peacemaker in a consistent and outstanding manner: respect for persons, promotion of dialogue, nonviolent conflict resolution, reconciliation and forgiveness. The award honors Norbert of Xanten's legacy of reconciliation by recognizing an individual who has been an influential advocate for sustainable peace in the world.
