Tyler Butts of Sun Prairie, Wis., has received a significant National Science Foundation fellowship for his doctoral education at Iowa State.

Butts, a 2018 graduate of St. Norbert College, will receive a $34,000 annual stipend plus a $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to Iowa State University. Butts also received an ISU fellowship for his first year and a graduate scholarship of $3,000 per year.

Butts worked in the aquatic ecology lab with Carrie Kissman, assistant professor of biology at St. Norbert.

“We looked at lakes, rivers, the food web and how disturbances affect those,” said Butts. "It was fun presenting at conferences and getting grants funded. My interest really grew by being taught how to do everything in the lab and moving on to reading journal articles and starting to come up with questions of my own.”
The National Science Foundation fellowship selected 2,000 from more than 12,000 applicants and come from all 50 U.S. states, as well as the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.
