The Norman Miller Center for Peace, Justice & Public Understanding at St. Norbert College will host multiple events featuring Dr. Mireille Twayigira, refugee education advocate for Jesuit Refugee Service, in April.
Twayigira became a refugee at age 2, and her story is one of both survival and resilience. As a refugee who had to flee from conflict, she spent much of her early childhood in search of a home. After a difficult and tragic journey in which she lost most of her family, Twayigira found hope through education. She received an education through Jesuit Refugee Service at Dzaleka camp in Malawi, which led to a scholarship to medical school in China. Today, Twayigira lectures internationally, using her medical degree and her story to help others heal and maintain hope.

Upcoming events featuring Twayigira are listed below:
Wisconsin Institute for Peace & Conflict Studies Student-Faculty Conference:
Friday, April 5, from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the F. K. Bemis International Conference Center on St. Norbert College’s campus. This year’s conference is based on the theme “Forced Migration and Human Flourishing” and will feature a keynote speech by Twayigira; 31 academic paper presentations by students and faculty from 18 universities; and expert speakers from Malawi, Italy and Sweden to address the refugee crisis. An interactive simulation about the refugee journey and the American premiere of the award-winning documentary short “Där finns inte jag (I Am Not There),” will also take place.

Registration is free for faculty and students of Wisconsin Institute for Peace & Conflict Studies member schools. Registration or non-members is $15 for students and $40 for faculty members.
