Xavier High School junior Isaiah Schmitz is the 2019 recipient of the Robert & Carol Bush Vocal Music Award, presented by the Dudley Birder Chorale of St. Norbert College. Schmitz received the award of $500 at the chorale’s performance of “America Sings” at St. Norbert College’s Walter Theatre on Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m., where he appeared as a featured soloist. Isaiah’s vocal music teacher, Anna Van Eperen, also received a $500 award, and Xavier High School, in Appleton, Wis., was presented with a $300 award for its choral library.
The endowed program of the Bush Vocal Music Award was established in 2003 for the Dudley Birder Chorale by Robert and Carol Bush as a means to promote vocal music in high schools. Each year, the recipient is selected from a high school located in one of the communities represented by membership in the chorale. These communities are the following Wisconsin counties: Brown, Outagamie, Kewaunee, Shawano, Door, Manitowoc and Oconto.
Auditions were held Sunday, April 14, at St. Norbert College. Competing high school students were recommended by their teachers as outstanding junior or senior vocal students. For more information about this award or the Dudley Birder Chorale, contact Josh Fields at 920-403-3432 or
