Xavier High School junior Isaiah Schmitz is the 2019 recipient of the Robert & Carol Bush Vocal Music Award, presented by the Dudley Birder Chorale of St. Norbert College. Schmitz received the award of $500 at the chorale’s performance of “America Sings” at St. Norbert College’s Walter Theatre on Friday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m., where he appeared as a featured soloist. Isaiah’s vocal music teacher, Anna Van Eperen, also received a $500 award, and Xavier High School, in Appleton, Wis., was presented with a $300 award for its choral library.
The endowed program of the Bush Vocal Music Award was established in 2003 for the Dudley Birder Chorale by Robert and Carol Bush as a means to promote vocal music in high schools. Each year, the recipient is selected from a high school located in one of the communities represented by membership in the chorale. These communities are the following Wisconsin counties: Brown, Outagamie, Kewaunee, Shawano, Door, Manitowoc and Oconto.
Auditions were held Sunday, April 14, at St. Norbert College. Competing high school students were recommended by their teachers as outstanding junior or senior vocal students.
