St. Norbert College sophomore Dahyana Flores (Green Bay, Wis.) has been named a 2020 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Contact, a national coalition of more than
1,000 colleges and universities dedicated to campus-based civic engagement. Flores is majoring in political science and international studies, with an emphasis on Latin America.

Flores is one of 290 students from 39 U.S. states, as well as Greece, Lebanon and Mexico, who were named Newman Civic Fellows this year. At St. Norbert College, she is involved in Multicultural Student Services as a peer mentor as well as the Latinx Student Union and the Black Student Union. She is currently working to start a support group for young adults who are undocumented, DACA recipients or members of mixed-status families. Her goal is to establish a safe space for these individuals to feel supported and heard.

“As the daughter of immigrants, Dahyana Flores has found her passion learning the stories and fighting for the rights of marginalized populations, particularly refugees and immigrants,” said Brian Bruess, president of St. Norbert College. “Dahyana remains optimistic that through collaborative efforts and community organizing, positive change is on the horizon.”

The Newman Civic Fellowship, named after Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional and civic growth for students who have demonstrated a capacity for leadership and an investment in solving public problems. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to apply for exclusive scholarship and postgraduate opportunities.
