Taylor Collard, a junior psychology major with a double minor in sociology and peace and justice at St. Norbert College, was selected to present at the 2023 Notre Dame Student Peace Conference held on April 14-15, in South Bend, Ind. The conference focused on the theme, “Voices: Naming War, Speaking Peace.”

Collard, from De Pere, Wis., presented on, “The Need for Child Life Specialists.” “This experience was amazing for me because I wanted to advocate for child life specialists and their departments within hospitals, and this was a wonderful way for me to do so,” said Collard.

Collard was one of nearly 40 students who represented 18 colleges and universities around the world and who presented their own research, practice and projects in the interdisciplinary field of peace studies during the conference.

The Notre Dame Student Peace Conference, endowed by Joan B. Kroc and sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, is an annual event organized by students and for students. Its mission is to provide space for students from all colleges and universities to dialogue about peacebuilding, social justice and conflict transformation. Each year, the event draws around a hundred students from across North America and around the world.

“This year’s Notre Dame Student Peace Conference pressed forward exciting and innovative approaches to contemporary global challenges,” says Laura Miller-Graff, associate professor of psychology and peace studies and director of undergraduate studies at the Kroc Institute. “It was an important opportunity to see the role of young scholars in shaping the future of peace studies,” Miller-Graff added.
