Candida Moss, Edward Cadbury Professor of Theology at the University of Birmingham, presents “Eugenics and Torture at the End of Days: Resurrection, Restoration and Revenge” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Fort Howard Theater at the F. K. Bemis International Center at St. Norbert College. It’s the first installment of the 2023-24 Killeen Chair Lecture Series: Visions of Apocalypse.

For many, the apocalypse is the time when everyone gets their just deserts: The good will be rewarded and the wicked will be punished, but there are hints in Christian scripture that no one quite knows what the process of being resurrected will be like. Moss’ lecture will explore how the aftermath of Judgment Day is a space where contemporary desires are projected and revenge fantasies are executed.

Moss is a scholar of the New Testament whose research explores the relationship of the body and power in relation to disability, martyrdom, suffering, death and the afterlife. Moss also writes about the Bible and society in the public sphere; she is a Papal news commentator for CBS and a religion news commentator and writer for CNN, BBC, National Geographic, Smithsonian, Discovery Channel, History Channel and others.

Established in 1984, the Killeen Chair of Theology & Philosophy aims to bring well-known scholars of theology and philosophy, and their work, to St. Norbert College. The program strives to emphasize the importance of theology and philosophy in a liberal arts education; to highlight St. Norbert College’s commitment to a personally, intellectually and spiritually challenging education; and to benefit the college, the Diocese of Green Bay and the broader community of northeast Wisconsin.

The Killeen Chair is named after the late Sylvester Killeen, O.Praem., the second abbot of St. Norbert Abbey and chancellor of the college. For more information, call the Killeen Chair office at 920-403-3957 or visit https://www.snc.edu/killeen.
