St. Norbert College instrumental jazz ensemble concert

St. Norbert College will host the instrumental jazz ensemble concert on Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Theatre, Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts. Both the Pulaski High School Jazz Ensemble and the St. Norbert College Jazz Ensemble will be performing. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the St. Norbert College Box Office at (920) 403-3950 or (800) 762-2699. The concert will feature guest conductor Fred Sturm. Sturm is director of Jazz and Improvisational Music at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music and guest conductor of professional jazz ensembles and radio orchestras in Germany, Italy, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. From 1991 to 2002, he served as professor of Jazz Studies and Jazz Ensemble/Studio Orchestra director at the Eastman School of Music. His works have been performed by jazz, orchestral, wind, choral and chamber ensembles worldwide, printed by nine international publishers and issued on four record labels. In 2003, he received the ASCAP/IAJE Commission in Honor of Quincy Jones, a Grammy nomination in 1997, and "Downbeat Magazine" has cited his collegiate ensembles as America's best eight times. The Pulaski High School Jazz Ensemble will be conducted by Ryan Alban and will perform Ike Sturm's "Blue Opening," Sammy Nestico's "Samantha," David Caffey's "A Minor Excursion" and Fred Sturm's "Chronometry." The St. Norbert Jazz Ensemble will be conducted by Sturm and will perform his works: "Follow the Leader," "Skyhawk," "Aim High," "Celtic Aire," "A Hymn for Her" and "Cabeza de Queso."
