English as a Second Language (ESL) Institute Activities and Special Opportunities

Cultural Activities and Class Excursions
Learn about U.S. culture and traditions in the Cultural Immersion course. In-class hands-on activities as well as off-campus excursions will allow you to study various cultural themes, such as U.S. college culture, state government, community safety, regional industry, local pastime, etc. The excursions will take you to places, such as the state capital, local dairy farm, city amusement park, or the zoo, depending on availability.

Optional Trips
Join us sight-seeing and shopping in Chicago. Visiting local attractions, cheering at sports events and trying various seasonal outdoor adventures are also highlights of our extra-curricular programming. All optional trips depend on student interest.

Service Learning
Go into the community to learn more about the needs of people. Learn about important issues and then apply what you have learned in a real-world setting. Current service learning opportunities include a local food pantry and other volunteer options.

Externships
Complete a short-term professional business practicum in a local business setting, accompanied by a CV workshop for effective job search and professional career opportunities.

Conversation Partners
Meet a U.S. college student to ask questions, learn about college life and make a new friend. Students meet on campus or at nearby cafes to chat and learn from each other. Request a conversation partner at the beginning of your program so that you will have a great connection while you study with us.

Peer-to-Peer Program
Come to the weekly meetings to gather with both international students and U.S. students to learn more about campus topics, such as making friends, dormitory living, traveling during breaks, culture shock and joining college clubs.

English Study Groups
Receive assistance with your homework and improve your English during these regularly scheduled tutoring sessions, which are at no extra cost to you. This is a great opportunity for additional language practice, while building your English language confidence.

Friendship Families
Meet your Friendship Family once or twice a month to share regular activities, such as shopping, cooking, sports, celebrations, etc. Learn about U.S. family life and make friendships that last a lifetime.
