Policy

St. Norbert is required by law to honor all garnishments, often without the employee’s consent. Wage garnishments may be ordered due to situations such as unpaid state or local taxes, child support orders or unpaid obligations to creditors.

Definitions
Garnishment
A legal order received by Payroll requiring withholding monies from an employee’s paycheck to satisfy a debt.

Wage attachment
The process of deducting money from an employee's paycheck as the result of a court order or action by an authorized agency. Common examples of debt that result in attachments include child support, taxes, creditor garnishments and bankruptcy orders.

Procedure

Although a court or regulatory agency is responsible for notifying you of a wage attachment, Payroll will also inform you about any wage attachment after it is processed.

Court-ordered wage attachments and federal and state levies will be deducted from your pay based on the information provided by the court or agency. Deductions will begin in the payroll cycle immediately following receipt of the attachment or levy, or as otherwise specified in the attachment.
