Time Off & Leaves: New Mexico Earned Sick Leave

Applies to: Employees working in New Mexico

Purpose: To provide paid sick leave in accordance with New Mexico's Healthy Workplaces Act

Policy

Effective July 1st, 2022, in accordance with the Healthy Workplaces Act of New Mexico, employees working in New Mexico will begin to accrue one hour of earned sick leave for every 30 thirty hours worked.  Earned Sick Leave balances shall carry over from year to year. Earned sick leave balances will be provided to employees each quarter.  

The list of all permissible purposes for which employees can use leave is in the text of the law itself. Here are a few examples of what the types of events that qualify (this list is by no means all inclusive):

  • Dental treatment
  • Medical conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth
  • Acupuncture
  • Child’s IEP meeting
  • Personal illness or the illness of a family member
  • Surgical procedures
  • Mental health therapy and counseling

Employees requesting to use their Earned Sick Leave should contact human resources.

Employees may use up to 64 hours of earned sick leave each calendar year.  St. Norbert College does not pay out any remaining Earned Sick Leave at the end of employment.
