Time Off & Leaves: Bone Marrow and Organ Donation

Applies to: Faculty and staff working in Wisconsin who have worked for 52 consecutive weeks and at least 1,000 hours

Purpose: To provide employee leave in order to donate bone marrow or an organ

Policy

Certain benefits-eligible faculty and staff who request to serve as a bone marrow or human organ donor are eligible to take an unpaid leave of absence of up to six weeks. This leave is in addition to leave that may be covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Procedures

Advance Notice
As far in advance as possible, notify your supervisor and Human Resources of your need, or even potential need, for donor leave, even if you don’t yet have specific dates. This helps the college plan for your absence. All information about your medical procedure will be confidential.

Scheduling Procedure
You must make reasonable efforts to schedule the medical procedure when it’s least disruptive to college operations, subject to the approval of the donee’s health care provider.

Medical Certification
You will need to obtain a medical certification from your health care provider that confirms the donee has a serious health condition which necessitates a bone marrow or organ transplant, and that you will be serving as the donor. The certification should also note the anticipated recovery time you’ll need.

Pay and Benefits During Leave
Donor leave is unpaid. However, you may use any paid leave you’ve accumulated during this time off. If you wish to do this, please notify Human Resources when you’re requesting donor leave. To maintain your existing group health benefits, you’ll need to pay your share of premiums during your leave. The college may require you to pay these premiums in escrow before your leave begins.

Alternate Job Position During Recovery
Instead of taking leave for your entire recovery period, you may request an alternate job position for the duration of your recovery that better accommodates your recovery process. However, the college isn’t obligated to agree to the request.

Reinstatement
Once you return from your leave, you will be reinstated to your former position if it’s vacant. If the position is not vacant, you will be assigned a position with equivalent compensation, benefits, shifts, hours and other conditions.

False Statements
Any false statements or false or misleading information you provide in regard to this policy violates the college’s rules on honesty.

Harassment and Discrimination
St. Norbert prohibits any employee from harassing or discriminating against any other employee who takes donor leave under this policy.
