About the Musicals

SNC Music Theatre " Summer Stage presents “Chess.” Set against a backdrop of U.S.-Soviet tensions at the height of the Cold War, “Chess” is a gripping tale of conflicted love taking place in the glare of a media frenzy surrounding an international chess tournament. The riveting score by the ABBA songwriting team of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (“Mamma Mia!”) and lyrics by Tim Rice (“Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Lion King”), highlight personal drama, intrigues and strategies that are worthy of the game itself. Powerful and familiar songs draw audiences center stage as the American Grand Master, the Soviet Champion and the woman torn between them hurtle toward an unpredictable end game. Music is by Andersson and Ulvaeus, with lyrics by Rice; based on an idea by Rice.

SNC Music Theatre " Next Stage presents “The Who’s Tommy.” Based on the iconic 1969 album from legendary rock band The Who, this musical is an exhilarating story of hope, healing and the human spirit. Musical theatre and rock and roll come together in unimaginable ways to guide audiences through a timeless journey. This five-time Tony Award-winning one-of-a-kind musical tells the story of the pinball-playing boy who triumphs over adversity. The rock opera “Tommy,” which was first performed by The Who in 1969, was originally conceived by Peter Townshend and Kit Lambert, with contributions by John Entwistle, Keith Moon and Roger Daltry.

“Chess” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals (concordtheatricals.com). “The Who’s Tommy” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) (MTIshows.com).

SNC Music Theatre - Summer Stage will also produce Tony-award winning musical “Something Rotten!” in July 2021. Based in the Renaissance era, this comedy follows two brothers and their struggle to compete with Shakespeare's theatrical genius and widespread popularity. The book for “Something Rotten” is written by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, with music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick. Originally conceived by Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick. “Something Rotten!” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
