St. Norbert College professor emeritus Paul Wadell will be the commencement speaker at St. Norbert College on Sunday, May 12, at 11:30 a.m. in the Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center on campus. In addition to giving the commencement address, Wadell will be given an honorary doctorate.

Baccalaureate Mass will take place on Saturday, May 11, at 4 p.m. at the Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center. Livestreaming of commencement events from St. Norbert College will be available at https://www.snc.edu/commencement/.

Wadell began his career at St. Norbert in 1998. His work received widespread recognition for both its scholarly depth and inspirational impact. As professor of theology and religious Studies at St. Norbert College, Wadell raised the profile of the college to national renown in the arena of Catholic intellectual life.

Wadell is the author or co-author of nine books, scores of scholarly articles, book reviews and a long list of publications in the popular press.

In recognition of Wadell’s contributions to the field, the highly respected Journal of Moral Theology dedicated a significant portion of its January 2021 volume to his work. The journal contains six articles from colleagues that explore the enduring value of his work in virtue ethics. The collection is organized around the central theme, “Thanks Be to God for Paul J. Wadell: Essays in Honor of a Friend and His Work.” It is noteworthy that Wadell’s picture is on the cover. No small recognition in an academic journal!

One administrative colleague drawing on local football history, summed up the difference Paul made here by enthusiastically declaring, “Paul’s arrival at St. Norbert is our Reggie White free agent signing!”

Wadell was named professor emeritus at St. Norbert College in 2019.

The board of trustees at St. Norbert College also approved doctoral degrees for the Rev. Ken De Groot, O. Praem., a Norbertine priest from St. Norbert Abbey and Sister Melanie Maczka, HMIED, originally from Chicago, co-founder of the renowned Casa ALBA Melanie in Green Bay.

Fred Schmidt, chair of the St. Norbert College Board of Trustees and a 1975 graduate of St. Norbert, will authorize the conferring of master’s and baccalaureate degrees. St. Norbert College president Laurie M. Joyner will award the degrees and diplomas with the assistance of Michael Marsden, interim vice president for academic affairs.

There are 388 students in the 2024 graduating class, including 366 candidates for baccalaureate degrees and 22 candidates for master’s degrees. Abbot Dane Radecki O. Praem., ’72 will deliver the benediction.

The student speaker at commencement is graduating senior Lucia Sanchez of Chicago. The national anthem will be sung by graduating senior Mileana Burmesch of Fredonia, Wis.; graduating senior Ben Schaefers of Fond Du Lac, Wis., will serve as honor conductor.
