M.S. Professional Counseling, Clinical Mental Health, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (May 2024)

I am a current third year master’s student at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, graduating in May with a professional counseling degree. I have had over 20 years of experience working with young adults and adolescents. I decided to go back to school to become a counselor so I could support people in their life journeys. I firmly believe that people are the experts of their own lives. I also know that experiences from the past or current situations affect the way that we experience life and view ourselves. Pain and suffering may be tainting our hopes for the future. Often, we want change in our lives but are unsure of how to bring about that change. There is hope for change- and I firmly believe that people are capable of creating positive change and positive outcomes for themselves. As a counselor, I offer understanding, encouragement, and empathy and I will be open and work with my clients as my authentic self. I believe that a counselor is like a guide, offering support, new skills and tools, and a space for self-reflection and self-rebuilding.

As a counselor, I use a client-centered approach to meet client needs by blending discussion, problem solving, cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and humanistic therapies. When counseling, I incorporate mindfulness-based interventions and positive psychology (really looking into thoughts, feelings and behaviors with a focus on strengths instead of weaknesses). My areas of interest include relationship issues, stress management, anxiety, depression, life transitions or changes, OCD and related disorders, social skill concerns, self-esteem challenges, and grief/loss.
