Summer Employment Opportunities on Campus

If your student isn’t locked into a summer job yet, working at St. Norbert might be a great option. Some 75 summer jobs are available on campus, most in auxiliary services (food and events) and athletics, says Kari Natzke, on-campus student employment program coordinator.

The positions are generally 30 to 40 hours per week, with a starting pay of $10 or $11 per hour. Those who work in food services receive a free meal with their shift, while all students can stay in Burke Hall free of charge. Students currently renting an apartment or campus house may remain there for the summer, as their lease is for 11.5 months.

Why stay on campus instead of returning home? Many students elect to combine a campus job with summer classes, or stay to work on research projects or at an area internship, Natzke says. Students often pull double duty, working both a campus job and doing summer research, or pairing a campus job with a local internship.

Another perk of working on campus during the summer is that if a student really enjoys the position they land, they can continue the job during the academic year.

“They get first dibs on the job and can lock it in before everyone else returns to campus,” Natzke says.

It's also important to remember that no matter the job — whether an internship, research position or catering — all of the skills learned are valuable and transferable to students’ future careers.

“All jobs help you learn how to communicate, work as a team, develop leadership skills and improve your time management,” Natzke says. “We’ll help students put those skills on their resumes, which will take them to their new life post-graduation.”
