The Campus Safety Department consists professional staff members supported by St. Norbert College student assistants. Campus Safety staff members are not sworn police officers. They have no arrest powers and do not carry weapons. Campus Safety Officer

Basic function and responsibility
Provide for the safety and well being of St. Norbert College students, faculty, staff and property through enforcement of college policies and procedures. Preserve peace through conspicuous patrol, respond to calls for assistance including emergency and crisis situations, and provide other safety-related services.

Characteristic duties

  • Perform routine patrols of and through on-campus buildings and the near off-campus areas.
  • Respond to emergency calls for assistance including medical matters, fire alarms and other alarms such including those relating to physical plant such as heat/steam system, etc.
  • Respond to routine calls for assistance including safety escorts and transports, building let-ins and vehicle jumpstarts.
  • Effectively document violations of college policy and other events by producing written incident reports.
  • Lock and unlock campus buildings and offices as necessary.
  • Enforce parking policies through issuance of parking tickets and towing of autos when necessary.
  • Relatedly, assist in the college’s snow removal process by helping coordinate vehicular evacuations of lots designated for snow removal.
  • Work closely with members of the local police and fire departments on matters of mutual concern relating to the safety of the campus community.


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a pleasant disposition and an ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact in sensitive situations.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in oftentime stressful situations.
  • Ability and willingness to work a wide variety of shifts including late night/early morning hours and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record required.

Supervision received
Supervision is received from the Senior Director of Campus Safety.

Campus Safety Student Assistant

Basic function and responsibility
Provide support for the Campus Safety department as needed, work at a Welcome desk at the St. Norbert Abbey, drive the student shuttle and assist at large college events like SNC days, Commencement and Freshman move in.


  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all who contact Campus Safety department.
  • A sense of humor and an ability to think creatively are important.

Supervision received
Supervision is received from the Associate Director of Campus Safety.
