Continuing Student Housing Application Process, Policies and Procedures

Housing applications for second, third and fourth-year students can be submitted through the online process starting March 4, 2024.  The application deadline for all housing applications is March 21, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. 

There are three housing options available to students.

  1. Residential status (on-campus housing)
  2. Commuter status (living with parents or legal guardians and traveling to campus. Students currently commuting need to re-apply for the 2024-25 academic year.
  3. Off-Campus status (not living in college owned housing or commuting from home)

All students are required to apply for one of the three housing options for the next academic year: on-campus housing, commuter status or off-campus status.

Because St. Norbert College has a four-year residency requirement, students need to receive permission from residential education & housing (REH) to commute or live off-campus.

An off-campus waiting list will be created during the spring semester for those interested in case housing projections change. Until then, students should not sign a lease.

Students who do not receive commuter status or off-campus status are required to apply for housing on campus. If a student chooses not to apply by May 2024, REH will assign the student to a room based on available space and charge the student's account.

Fourth-year student groups will be assigned housing first in order of the best randomly generated lottery date/time slot.

Residential Status

Continuing Student Housing Selection Process
  • Housing assignment information – to include commuter status, timelines and how to apply – will be released the week of February 5, 2024 by email.
  • The application process does not go through the lottery for Michels Service Hall and Residential Themed Communities. A limited number of college houses will be assigned as RTC residences.
  • Applications for Michels Hall and Residential Themed Communities will be due in early February.
Classification Year for Housing Assignments
  • Students will be assigned by second, third, or fourth year classifications (semesters in college).
  • Classifications will be determined by the number of fall and spring semesters in college. Fall and spring semesters in college through Jan. 1, 2024 will be used to calculate second, third or fourth year classifications.
  • Housing classification is not the same as the registrar’s class standing.
  • For the 2024-25 housing selection process: 
    • Second-year students will have 1 or 2 completed semesters.
    • Third-year students will have 3 or 4 completed semesters.
    • Fourth-year students will have 5 or more completed semesters.
Continuing Student On-Campus Housing Options
Second-year students can apply to live in Burke doubles or singles, Michels, MMM, Sensenbrenner triples or VMC.

Only third and fourth year students can apply for upper-class housing options. Groups that include second-year students will not be assigned upper-class housing. Upperclass housing areas include: Carriage House, College Houses, Doksany Hall, Gries Hall, Hugh Hall, Prémontré Hall, Roggenburg Hall, St. Joseph Hall, Townhouses and Xanten Hall.

Please note that REH reserves the right to assign or re-assign housing units based upon gender needs according to enrollment. The residence halls that may be affected are Burke, Michels, MMM and VMC.

Prémontré and Xanten Halls
  • All lease terms will be for 11.5 months. This includes paying for a required summer term (at a reduced rate) even if you choose not to live in the apartment over the summer. The summer payment is due by June 1.
Bedroom Assignments
Students will select their assigned bedrooms during the continuing student housing selection process at their assigned lottery date and time.

All bedroom changes must be approved by REH after the Continuing Student Housing Lottery Process has been completed. [Bedroom changes after May without pre-approval will result in a $75 per student fee.] Students will be unable to change their bedroom assignments during the move-in process.

Room Buyouts
Room buyouts are not an option offered for the fall semester.

Students who live in a room with a vacancy (or who believe a vacancy may open up due to a roommate receiving a room change) may request to “buy out” their room during the spring semester (i.e. in order to ensure that another student will not be assigned to that space for the rest of the semester). They are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

While very unlikely, if a student must be placed into the space for emergency reasons, REH reserves the right to approve or disapprove requests as necessary. In the event the student(s) is denied a “buy out” request, they will be refunded the full buy-out charge. Room buyouts are not offered for Gries Hall for fall or spring semesters.
