About music at St. Norbert College
A faculty of outstanding performers and excellent teachers are ready to help you as you begin laying the groundwork for your professional career. With opportunities for experiences that encompass major choral/orchestral works to European performance trips, appearances at professional conventions, opera workshops and jazz performance, a degree in music from St. Norbert College will provide plenty of opportunities to be thoroughly prepared to take your place in the professional music world.

Departmental objectives include the development of listening skills, knowledge of repertoire and musicianship, along with the consideration of student spirituality through aesthetic experiences in music. A systematic assessment process will feature the student portfolio, complete with critiques written by the faculty, audio and video tapes, compositions, journal entries and student self-evaluative reflective essays.

Special information and additional requirements for the student majoring in music can be found in the Music Student Survival Guide available in the Pennings Hall of Fine Arts.

Why study music?

The music department at St. Norbert College is a place that is full of exciting and challenging opportunities for music students. Whether you focus your musical experiences on instrumental music, choral music, performance or music education, we have what you need to be successful. Graduates of our programs have gone on to be successful in graduate school, professional careers and as teachers. This is the result of a long tradition of fine teaching in a setting where students come first.

Music is considered not merely a skill to be mastered, but more deeply as an expression of the feelings, values and convictions found throughout humanity. The study, performance and creation of music can lead to an awareness of one's own values. Students are exposed to various aspects of music history, theory and performance with the intent of fostering a life-long understanding of music, thereby influencing their careers and vocations. Students encounter music from major time periods, religious beliefs and cultures with the purpose of developing understanding and acceptance.

Mission statement

The overall mission of the St. Norbert College Music Department is the preparation of students for careers in teaching, performance and related music professions. All St. Norbert College students have an opportunity to enrich their musical understanding and sensitivity through courses in music appreciation, theory, history and music performance. Music is not merely a skill to be mastered but can be considered more deeply as an expression of the feelings, values and aspirations found throughout human history. Our curriculum exposes students to music of different eras, religious beliefs and cultures with the purpose of developing understanding and a lifelong appreciation of the musical arts.
