Islam and Victorianism in 19th-Century Africa

TThis course focuses on the lives and legends of two charismatic figures of the 19th century – Charles G. Gordon, the Victorian martyr-hero and Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, the Sudanese holy man and revolutionary. After considering the ideals that each man died trying to uphold, students examine a variety of accounts of their lives in an attempt to understand the cultures that created these men and the discipline of history that explains them. Fall semester, alternate years.
