From time to time, we like to showcase a new SNC grad who’s entered the workplace or grad school. Success stories like these are pretty common. In fact, 95 percent of SNC's Class of 2022 alumni who responded to a survey said they were employed, in grad school or doing service work within nine months of graduating.

Why did you choose to pursue your college education at St. Norbert College?

I grew up across the river. I was at Foxview Intermediate School drawing pictures of St. Norbert and didn’t think I would come back there. But when I explored more and understood what St. Norbert had to offer to me as an individual, it really changed my perception. The whole campus is open for opportunity. I tell people all the time that opportunities will present themselves at SNC with people to support you along the way: “Take care of the college and the college will take care of you.”

How did you settle on sociology as a major?

I was a biology major when I enrolled, and then I switched to math education. But when I took an Intro to Sociology course as part of the college’s core curriculum, I found it incredibly interesting. It was something that I really enjoyed studying and not just a subject that I was good at. When I dove further into the sociology major, I quickly knew it was right for me.

I was drawn to topics around social media and diversity. It was eye-opening learning about how I can truly help others who don’t share the same advantages that I have. My Intersections of Privilege course explained a lot of current issues that formed new perspectives that will serve me very well in my career, and life in general.

What inspired you to choose a career dedicated to helping others?

SNC encourages you to be there for your peers from day one, even on the tour I took in high school. It felt like my tour guide was saying “hello” to everyone on campus! It reinforced the friendly atmosphere on campus, and the feeling that everyone is friends. I think that’s why St. Norbert produces so many students who go on to people-focused careers. For four years, you’re always saying “hi” and opening doors. You’re meeting up with people every day and want it to continue after graduation.

Who encouraged you on your college journey?

I’ve gotten so many bits of great advice here. Jenny Clayton (Student Account Specialist) told me: “Ask for help early on because it’s easier to fix your issues as soon as you notice them. Do not be afraid to reach out to someone.”

How are you liking your new job?

I actually started a couple of months before graduation. I really like the personal aspect of this field. I’m excited to work with patients and to help them work through problems. My classes in general really set up an understanding of people. Dr. Geerling, in particular, did a wonderful job of explaining what happens to you in response to real-life situations from principles of psychology.

Sometimes in this field it comes down to just using your best judgment. When I look back at different scenarios explained in class, I can grab something that helps me help someone else. A lot of what I’ve learned and now what I do is beyond textbooks.
