“Originally I chose biology because I knew I wanted to go into medicine and biology provides the smoothest transition. Here especially, the biology major is so diverse. I took a parasitology course this semester. General biology is focused a lot on diversity of organisms and the kingdoms of life. It’s not just, ‘This is what happens in the heart.’ I really like knowing what's going on in the world. For example, looking at a tree outside and knowing how photosynthesis is working. I love all those little details.

“What I like most about studying biology here is that I’ve gotten to connect it to the other subject areas. I took the history of American charity, poverty and welfare with Dr. Trollinger. For our semester long project, we could choose anything that had to do with social reform in America. I looked at how the cholera epidemics affected urban sanitation policy in New York. To anyone else, that might sound super boring and weird, but at the same time, I was taking microbiology. To be able to link those classes added another dimension.

“I’m currently applying to medical school. I’ve been accepted to a few, so right now I’m trying to decide where I want to be. I could see myself doing something like family medicine or pediatrics, something where I get to use the scientific knowledge that I’ve acquired, but also can build really strong individual connections with patients and get to see them more than once. For me, that's important, to be able to watch them grow up. I’ve had the same physician since I was little and my mom is a family physician, so I know how close she is with her patients. To be able to experience life with your patients, I think is really cool.”
