Humans of St. Norbert: Lisa Burke

Humans of St. Norbert:

“I was introduced [to meditation] in college. I still remember the class! I had done meditation on and off since, but nothing really that I devoted my time to. It was sort of as needed. [Two years ago,] I felt like I just needed something and I just started Googling retreats. My husband was very supportive and everything just sort of fell into place. I realized that I needed to take care of me because I like to take care of others. I decided to go to Cambodia on [a mindfulness and meditation] retreat. Everything about it was just so amazing! When I was on this retreat, I was like, ‘Wow, I need to bring this back to St. Norbert.’

“I realized I needed to know how to teach this to people so I can give them this tool to help with stress reduction, relaxation or feeling better in general. So I went back this past January for the mediation teacher training. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but it was very in depth and I learned so many different breathing techniques and relaxation techniques. The meditation training just gave me those tools for myself to have a better practice and the knowledge to teach others. It allowed me to say, ‘Let’s practice this together. I’m going to show you what to do.’ It was that next step of showing what to do and how to teach it.” – Lisa Burke, licensed clinical social worker for counseling & psychological services
