“When she said she wanted to play soccer, I decided to sign up to coach. My dad was always involved in my youth athletics and my most fond memories were him coaching T-ball or soccer. When I first became a parent, coaching my kids was something that was a parent bucket list item. Coaching my daughter’s soccer team was more challenging than I thought it would be. Soccer has never been my chosen sport. I played basketball and football in high school, so it was definitely a learning process. We had to do everything from planning practices to setting lineups. At that time, they were kindergarteners. As much planning as I did, it would all be thrown out the window. It was fun seeing the kids, even at that age, come together as a team.

“Maddie’s not going to do soccer again this year. She wanted to do softball which is so outside of my knowledge that I passed on that. I’ll jump back into the coaching when she’s old enough for organized basketball. Coaching was a really good experience and I think she gained confidence having me there too.”
