Humans of St. Norbert:

“I’m from Kathmandu, Nepal. I was born there, raised there and then I moved to Wisconsin in 2017 for college. From the very beginning, I had an opinion of wanting to go to a small town. It’s a big transformation from Nepal to the United States in terms of the culture and in terms of the language, so I thought going to a small community would help me adapt and to totally be in the community. I didn’t really have a plan of what I was going to do so I was really looking for a liberal arts education so I could explore the different areas and decide later on. I was also interested in research so I was looking at institutions providing undergrad research experience. While I was looking at Facebook pages of some of the colleges I was looking for, I saw a notification for St. Norbert College so I liked it and then did more research afterward. I applied because it met all the criteria I was looking for and then I heard back from the international office with an offer and then I was like, ‘Okay, I want to go there!’

“I think I saw less advancement in higher education in Nepal in general and [specifically] in educational psychology, which I was initially considering to major in, as well as in neuroscience, the major I eventually chose. And simply because of that fact, I would not have got the same opportunities [in Nepal] in terms of flexibility in choosing a major or engaging in other activities such as research, being a TA or tutor that I'm getting here at SNC.

“[My favorite thing about SNC is] the sense of communio that we have here. It’s so easy to go talk to people and make friends both inside and outside of class. That doesn’t just apply to the students, but there are also professors acting like your friends so that has been a great experience for me.” – Subash Lamichhane ’21
