Humans of St. Norbert:

“When I got to high school, my dad had previously done track and he was going to be the coach. I came in really only wanting to high jump and I really did not want to run. He kinda was the one who forced me into it. It was hard when he was giving me corrections because he’s my dad. I didn’t want to listen to him, especially when there were other coaches there. I think once I got beyond that … it was easier. I still say he was my favorite coach ever. He just put everything he had into coaching. I would not be here doing track if it wasn't for him.

“By the end of my freshman year, my coach had me try triple jump and that quickly became my favorite event. Last season, I set the [SNC] record for triple jump. It definitely wasn’t something I expected because I was two feet off from the record. When I came in, my coach told me my goal should be the record. As a freshman I was like, ‘Yeah, good joke.’ I did not think that he was realistic in those expectations. I was very surprised by myself when I actually broke it.

“The team is really supportive and that is what I have appreciated the most from it. I thought [the team] was going to be very competitive ... where people weren’t always supportive of one another. But the track team is extremely supportive. I think some of my teammates were more enthusiastic when I broke the record than I was. It’s a really cool atmosphere and the coaches are amazing. [Track] started as my least favorite sport and now it's my favorite.” – Sydney Spaeth ’23
