Humans of St. Norbert:
“It was the first Friday night of this school year and I was in my element preparing for a football broadcast. It was St. Norbert hosting Loras for the first game of the year. Everyone is out having the college experience doing this or that thing with friends. I took a second to step back and was like, ‘This is all I need!’ I love preparing for a game. Papers are everywhere, highlighters all over the place, 18 different tabs open on the computer looking up information. That, to me, is one of the best parts of announcing because you just can’t beat all the organized chaos you have preparing for a game.
“Doing a game is a cool experience as well. There was a big game for the men's basketball team during my sophomore year. Oshkosh came here to play St. Norbert and I was doing a solo, play-by-play broadcast. St. Norbert hits a buzzer beater to send it into overtime. We had a great overtime performance and eventually got the win because an Oshkosh player lost the ball out of bounds. That call on that play was one of the better calls I’ve ever had in my career. That moment really encapsulates what it feels like during a game.
“I always knew I wanted to be a sports broadcaster. Freshman year during the Gateway Seminar, they sent us to the involvement fair. Being the freshman that I was, I was thinking, 'I’m too cool for this. I’m not going to sign up for any club or be interested in this.’ Well sure enough, I saw SNC Radio and the president of the club pitched the idea of hosting a sports podcast talk show. That was how The Tony G Show podcast got started. Since he knew that I was interested in being a broadcaster, that October, just a month into college, he said to me, ‘Hey, one of the broadcasters can’t make it for the football game. Would you like to step in?’ Ever since then, I’ve been pretty much involved with every sport that involves a ball or a puck whether it is public address announcing or play-by-play announcing.” – Tony Giordana ’22
