Programs: Art

Shan's art investigates the harmony, friction and interdependence of all things, as well as relationships between artifice, wilderness, vast space and deep time. She is interested in interdependent structures, ecosystems and communities. Primary influences include observation of the natural world, references from antique charts, fabrics and celestial maps, as well as visual and mathematical patterns.

Her paintings have been funded by the Percent for Art Program of the State of Montana, and the Direct Purchase Program of the Wisconsin Arts Board. Her curatorial and museum work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Creation and Presentation Program of the Wisconsin Arts Board and the American Alliance of Museums. 

In her teaching, she emphasizes attention to craft, the development of conceptual and creative thought processes, and professional studio practices.
