Sustainability

Be a guardian of the planet (no superpowers required)

Every passing year reminds us of the increasingly tenuous nature of our relationship with Planet Earth, and of the stress we’re putting on its life-sustaining systems.

Environmental sustainability is no longer a “wish list” item … it’s a “must-do” item. With a sustainability minor from St. Norbert College, you can take your place among the growing number of professionals championing the policies and practices that will protect our planet – and us.

We’ve built the sustainability minor with maximum flexibility in mind – because the current climate and ecosystem crisis will require individuals in all careers to solve. A typical sustainability program might only focus on the traditional sciences. But here at SNC, you can focus on sustainability within programs as diverse as business, economics, psychology and even religious studies.

Academic paths within the sustainability minor

At SNC, you can minor in sustainability in combination with an earth science major – we offer concentrations in geology and environmental geology – or a major in many other divisions across the college.

Elevate your education in sustainability

The SNC Environmental and Geology clubs provide opportunities for students interested in sustainability. Their activities include guest speakers, field trips and service work.

Your sustainability education at work

A background in sustainability enhances one's ability to stand out in the workforce. According to Linkedln’s Global Green Skills Report 2022, “green talent” (i.e., environmental sustainability expertise) in the global workforce rose from 9.6 percent in 2015 to 13.3 percent in 2022, a 38.5 percent growth rate. The same study noted that while job postings that required green skills had increased 8 percent annually since 2017, the talent grew by just 6 percent.

Your sustainability minor could lead you into one of these promising careers:

  • Sustainability manager
  • Energy and LEED analyst
  • Natural resource program manager
  • Zero-waste compliance analyst
  • Environmental scientist
  • Conservationist
  • Climate resiliency coordinator
  • Social compliance analyst
