International studies

Become a true global citizen

Never in the history of the planet have global citizens felt each others’ influence so strongly. When you major in international studies at St. Norbert College, you’ll explore the contemporary world through an intercultural lens. The multifaceted worldview you develop will equip you to approach issues globally and then to act in the interest of the world’s greatest good.

Academic paths within the international studies major

As an international studies major here, you’ll design an interdisciplinary program for a Bachelor of Arts degree that focuses on mastering a specific language and zeroing in on a specific region for focused study — choose from African, Asian, European, Latin American or Middle Eastern countries. You’ll discover the challenges that face your chosen geographic area while learning the language. After taking coursework in political science and international studies, you can choose topics to study in economics, environmental science, geography and theology. You’ll leave SNC with a deep understanding of our global interconnectedness by studying intercultural political, environmental, economic, philosophical and cultural dimensions.

Elevate your international studies degree

Our thorough liberal arts education provides a strong foundation in research and writing, while improving your creative problem solving and analytical skills. You’ll also have the option to join Global Scholars, a student organization that encourages interculturally competent global citizens. Some of SNC’s international studies majors land internships in Washington, D.C., through our semester in Washington partnership with American University. Others join the growing ranks of SNC students who have landed impressive college internships at spots such as the British Parliament and Doctors Without Borders. Focused on diplomacy? Participate in a for-credit United Nations Seminar in either New York City or Geneva, Switzerland.

  • I’d tell the same thing to people just starting out: Find the major that speaks to you, and eventually it’ll work out at the end. It’s all about the skills you learn and the connections you make — the way you express yourself and your qualities, and how you’re willing to learn.

  • When I was in high school, I really liked getting to know my teachers, and I did the same thing when I came to St. Norbert – it made it feel like home. I also liked the offerings, the activities and clubs and all the leadership opportunities.
