The Washington Semester at American University

Valuable job experience and networking opportunities

Since the mid-1980s, St. Norbert College has partnered with the School of Professional and Extended Studies at American University to offer the Washington Semester Program (WSP). WSP is an academic experiential-learning program that allows SNC students to live a full semester in Washington, D.C., and meet professionals, practitioners and academics who are leaders and experts in their fields. The program gives students valuable job experience and networking opportunities and prepares them for a competitive job market. Students can also participate in an international travel component tailored to their specific concentration.

While enrolled at the AU-Washington Semester, students typically earn 8 credits for their seminar, 4 credits for the internships, and 3 to 4 credits for an elective course from AU’s wide range of course offerings (a research project is also available instead of a fourth course).

Students may choose one of the following concentrations for their seminar focus:

  • American politics
  • Foreign policy
  • Global economics and business
  • International law and organizations
  • Journalism and new media
  • Justice and law
  • Religion, politics, peace and security
  • Public health
  • Sustainable development
Students registering for the Washington Semester must have program approval. Students register for full-time status with WASH 3930 or WASH 3931. Actual credits earned are assigned after the completion of the experience.

There are no additional costs associated with this program.
